Copycat Big Mac ® Sauce Recipe

The Big Mac ® is one of the most iconic sandwiches on the McDonald’s ® menu, and it’s been around for nearly 60 years! The sandwich was first launched in 1967 and invented by Jim Delligatti, one of McDonald’s earliest franchisees. The Big Mac’s appeal is global, and it is a staple menu item in McDonald’s restaurants worldwide. In countries that don’t eat beef, the burger is replaced by chicken, but it’s the Big Mac Sauce recipe that makes it stand out from the crowd.

Big Mac sauce is tangy, spicy, and slightly sweet and perfectly matches the flavour and texture of the burger. The sauce recipe is a closely guarded secret, but McDonald’s has revealed some of its ingredients. The ingredients include mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish, and mustard, along with vinegar, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika.

Can I Buy Big Mac Sauce At McDonalds?

McDonald’s did sell Big Mac sauce for a limited time, but here in the UK, it mainly consisted of small dipping pots.  These were like the standard sauce pots given out with chicken nuggets.  Legend has it that 500 bottles of sauce also existed and there is evidence of these on *Ebay  Many people have petitioned McDonalds to sell the sauce separately, but they aren’t likely to give away the secret sauce recipe for one of their best-selling items anytime soon.

In the meantime, the best we can do is try to recreate the authentic Big Mac sauce recipe in our kitchen.

Big Mac Sauce Recipes

There are many copycat Maccie D’s recipes online. Most of these are on US websites and use ingredients that aren’t sold or are hard to get here in the UK. I do not know what Miracle Whip is, but it appears in many sauce recipes online. Edit: I found out it is a tangy mayonnaise-type dressing by Kraft ®.

The Big Mac sauce recipe below uses ingredients that are easy to find in most stores worldwide.  Sweet pickle relish is available in any supermarket. We used Branston smooth pickle but any small chunk pickle relish will do. Yellow mustard is a milder mustard than standard English mustard. Heinz do a yellow mustard but other brands are available!

4. Cover the bowl with cling film and refrigerate the sauce for at least an hour before serving. This allows the flavours to meld together, enhancing the taste.
