The Burger King Whopper ® is a true classic, having been on the BK menu since 1957. During the 1950s, burger restaurants were springing up all over the USA, and competition was fierce among restaurants. One of the founders of Burger King ® noticed that a rival restaurant was doing well serving larger-sized burgers, and thus, the Whopper was born. The flame-grilled burger has been a best-seller ever since. But if you fancy rustling up your homemade Whopper, our copycat Burger King Whopper recipe has you covered.
Homemade Burger King Whopper Recipe
Ingredients
For the Beef Patty
- 500g minced beef (80% lean, 20% fat)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
To Assemble
- 4 sesame seed buns
- 8 slices of dill pickle
- 1 small white onion, finely sliced
- 2 tomatoes, sliced
- 4 leaves of iceberg lettuce
- 4 slices of American cheese (optional)
- 4 tbsp mayonnaise
- 4 tbsp ketchup
Instructions
1. Prepare the Beef Patties
Combine the beef, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder in a large mixing bowl. Mix until well combined.
Divide the mixture into four equal parts and shape each into a patty. Make the patties slightly larger than the buns, as they will shrink while cooking.
Place the patties on a plate, cover with cling film, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. This helps them firm up and hold their shape while cooking.
2. Grill the Patties
Preheat your grill or barbecue to a high heat. If you don’t have a grill, use a griddle or frying pan over medium-high heat.
Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until they are thoroughly cooked and have a nice char on the outside.
If you’re using cheese, place a slice on each patty during the last minute of cooking and cover the grill to melt the cheese.
3. Prepare the Buns
While the patties cook, lightly toast the sesame seed buns on the grill or in a toaster. This helps to prevent them from becoming soggy when you add the sauces.
4. Assemble the Whopper
Spread 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise on the bottom half of each bun.
Place the cooked beef patty (with melted cheese if using) on top of the mayonnaise.
On top of the patty, add two slices of dill pickle, a few rings of finely sliced onion, and a slice of tomato.
Place a leaf of iceberg lettuce over the tomato.
Spread 1 tablespoon of ketchup on the top half of the bun and place it on top of the lettuce to complete the burger.
Tips for Creating The Authentic BK Taste
Much of the appeal of the Whopper is its authentic flame-grilled flavour. To recreate the Burger King Whopper recipe as closely as possible, use a charcoal grill. This gives the smoky flavour that is so appealing.
To prevent the patties from puffing up and ensure they cook evenly, ensure they are uniform in size and even in thickness. Make a small indentation in the centre of the patty, which will stop the burger from bulging on the grill.
