We are all looking for opportunities to boost our earnings. If you have been on YouTube or TikTok recently, you are sure to have come across this money-making scam. The latest get-rich-quick scheme involves creating low-content books and journals and then using Amazon’s self-publishing platform to print and sell them.
Numerous “influencers” are producing content proclaiming how easy the process is. They insist that you can start making significant money with basic computer skills. Their claims sound pretty convincing if you don’t know what a waste of time this process is. One company has even developed a platform specifically to help you churn out dozens of low content books.
Before you invest any money, or if you’ve already been lured in by one of these “opportunities,” let me explain why creating low-content books won’t work.
Why Low-Content Books Never Sell
Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is a self-publishing platform that uses print-on-demand, so books are only printed when a sale occurs. This avoids the need to hold stock or print multiple copies in advance.
KDP is designed for e-books and paperback books. However, some unscrupulous individuals exploit the print-on-demand feature to create “books” with little or no content. They deceive others into believing that making money on Amazon with low effort is possible, which is far from the truth.
These low content promoters saw an opportunity to exploit the print-on-demand system. Because the system only prints books when sold, there’s no need to hold any stock. These “authors” use the system to produce hundreds or even thousands of notebooks, claiming that designing “journals” and other low content books can generate massive profits on Amazon. However, these books typically consist of nothing more than a cover and blank pages.
Don’t Waste Your Time Creating Low Content Books
Fortunately, Amazon’s system is too sophisticated for such scams to succeed. KDP is intended for well-written, content-rich books that appeal to readers. The print-on-demand system was never designed for journals, diaries, or books with blank pages. The market is already saturated with well-produced journals and diaries. Most poor-quality attempts will never sell a single copy.
Before KDP approves a book, it undergoes a review process. Thousands of genuine, well-written books are always waiting to be approved. Low content submissions are pushed to the back of the queue.
Even if you manage to get a low content book through the review process, it’s unlikely to generate any sales. These books don’t appear in search results, so your odds of making a sale are very low. You are wasting your time.
Copyright Issues with Low Content Books
Copyright is often an issue with low content. In the worst-case scenario, you could face legal action. Just because an image is available on a free image site, does not mean it can be used in journals and notebooks. Many images available online come with restrictions, particularly regarding commercial use. And did you know that even fonts are copyrighted?
Making Money from Genuine E-book Publishing
Kindle Direct Publishing is a fantastic resource for authors when used correctly, meaning by writing proper, content-rich books designed to appeal to buyers. Despite what scammers may claim, there is no get-rich-quick scheme in writing. If you want to succeed in self-publishing, you must put in the effort to create unique, well-written, and engaging books.
