Great skincare doesn’t have to be expensive! Despite what the big skin care manufacturers would have you believe, your skin doesn’t need all those fancy-sounding ingredients. Increasingly, people are turning away from science and back towards natural skincare. These DIY skincare recipes prove Mother Nature provides everything your skin needs to look radiant and healthy.
Why Go DIY With Skincare?
Do you know what peptides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide even do? Most of us have no idea and take it on trust from the big skincare brands that they are good for our skin. But if you want to know what you are putting on your body, homemade skincare products are the way to go.
These skincare recipes are quick and easy to make, and you probably already have most of the ingredients in your kitchen. Just a word of caution, though: Do a patch test on your skin first to make sure you don’t react with any of the ingredients.
Oat and Almond Milk Cleanser (Vegan Friendly)
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons finely ground oats
- 1/4 cup almond milk
- 1 teaspoon coconut oil (optional for dry skin)
Instructions:
- Mix the oats and almond milk in a bowl.
- Add coconut oil (optional) and mix well.
- Gently massage the mixture onto your face in circular motions.
- Rinse off with lukewarm water and pat dry.
Brown Sugar and Olive Oil Scrub (Vegan Friendly)
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice (optional, brightens skin)
Instructions:
- Combine the sugar and olive oil in a bowl.
- Add lemon juice if using, and mix thoroughly.
- Apply the scrub to your face, gently exfoliating in circular motions.
- Rinse with warm water and pat dry.
Gentle Oatmeal and Honey Cleanser
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup ground oats
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1/4 cup warm water
Instructions:
- Mix the ground oats with honey and warm water to form a paste.
- Apply the mixture to your face in circular motions.
- Rinse with warm water and pat dry.
Revitalising Green Tea Toner (Vegan Friendly)
Ingredients:
- 1 green tea bag
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
Instructions:
- Steep the green tea bag in boiling water for 10 minutes.
- Remove the tea bag and allow the tea to cool completely.
- Add apple cider vinegar to the cooled tea.
- Pour the mixture into a clean bottle and apply to your face with a cotton pad.
Avocado and Yogurt Face Mask
Ingredients:
- 1/2 ripe avocado
- 2 tablespoons plain yogurt
- 1 tablespoon honey
Instructions:
1. Mash the avocado until smooth.
2. Mix in the yoghurt and honey until well combined.
3. Apply the mask to your face and leave it on for 15-20 minutes.
4. Rinse off with lukewarm water and pat dry.
Lavender and Chamomile Bath Soak (Vegan Friendly)
Ingredients:
- 1 cup Epsom salts
- 1/4 cup dried lavender flowers
- 1/4 cup dried chamomile flowers
- 10 drops lavender essential oil (optional)
Instructions:
- Mix the Epsom salts, lavender flowers, and chamomile flowers in a bowl.
- Add the lavender essential oil if using, and stir until mixed well.
- Store the mixture in an airtight container.
- When ready to use, add 1/2 cup of the soak to warm bath water and enjoy a relaxing soak.
Green Tea and Aloe Vera Face Mist (Vegan Friendly)
Ingredients:
- 1 green tea bag
- 1/2 cup hot water
- 2 tablespoons aloe vera gel
- 5 drops tea tree oil (optional)
Instructions:
- Steep the green tea bag in hot water for 10 minutes, then allow it to cool completely.
- Mix the cooled green tea with the aloe vera gel and tea tree oil.
- Pour the mixture into a clean spray bottle.
- Store in the refrigerator and use within one week. Spray onto your face as needed for a refreshing boost.
Simple Ingredients for DIY Skincare Recipes
- Oats soothe, making them excellent for sensitive skin.
- Honey naturally draws moisture into the skin and has antibacterial properties. It’s great for treating breakouts and acne.
- Green tea is rich in antioxidants, which help reduce inflammation.
- Apple cider vinegar balances the skin’s pH and has antimicrobial properties.
- Avocado is packed with healthy fats and vitamins that deeply nourish and moisturise the skin.
- Yoghurt contains lactic acid, which gently exfoliates and brightens the skin.
- Sugar is a natural exfoliant that removes dead skin cells and smooths skin.
- Coconut oil is highly moisturising and helps to repair skin.
Get creative and don’t be afraid to experiment. One of my all-time favourite skin masks is raw oatmeal mixed with honey. It’s sticky and a bit of a nightmare to apply and remove, but it leaves my skin feeling fresh and pampered.
